MELVIN BERNARD – HISTORY ON THE EDGE
On 27 May 2026, as part of the History on the Edge lecture series, we hosted a new lecture at the Institute of Contemporary History.
In his presentation, “The Making of Workers’ Self-Management: Housing Distribution in Late Socialist Yugoslavia (Mid-1970s–1980s)”, Melvin Bernard examined the allocation of housing and housing loans in late socialist Yugoslavia.
Drawing on archival research conducted in Serbia and Croatia, he explored the role of enterprises, workers’ councils, and trade unions in housing policy decision-making, showing how debates over housing allocation reflected broader questions of social justice, equality, and workers’ participation.
The event was held in English, both at the Institute and via Zoom.
The full lecture will soon be available on our SIstory Infra YouTube channel.
In this post, we are sharing photo highlights.
