THE SISTORY PORTAL CELEBRATES 18 YEARS!

In October 2026, the Slovenian History Portal – SIstory celebrates its 18th anniversary. Since its launch in 2008, it has developed into an important part of Slovenia’s research infrastructure and a central online platform providing access to digitised historical sources, scholarly literature, and research data.

The portal, developed as part of the research infrastructure for Slovenian historiography at the Institute of Contemporary History, provides researchers, students, teachers, and the general public with free access to a wide range of historical resources. In addition to scholarly monographs, journals, and archival sources, it offers recordings of lectures and conferences, as well as important research databases, including databases of victims of the First and Second World Wars and historical population censuses.

Over the past eighteen years, SIstory has become much more than a digital archive. It has evolved into a research environment that connects historical sources, modern digital technologies, and the research community, contributing to the development of digital humanities and open science.

To mark this anniversary, we have prepared a special collection of reflections in which colleagues and other contributors to the portal look back on its development, significance, and role in Slovenian historiography.
