Eastern enlargement, or an all-European transformation? The 1990s in European politics
Workshop, September 29, 2022
The workshop Eastern enlargement, or an all-European transformation? The 1990s in European politics, will be held at the Institute of Contemporary History on September 29, 2022.
East-Central European countries have recently experienced fierce debates on the transformation era of the 1990s. These debates have focused on national, social, and economic policies, while completely omitting the European context. The same countries also became EU membership seekers in the period, and their political actors and institutions intensely interacted with EU requirements, actors and processes. The odes of this interaction may have had resulted in ambiguous sentiments toward Europe, maybe even contributed to building the Eurosceptic and / or populist scene. Yet we do not want to restrict the debate to the post-socialist region and thereby miss the question of how the decade of Europeanization and Eastern enlargement had been perceived by EU member states and what transformations did their political and parliamentary systems undergo in the period.
