The Nervous State: short movie presentation and discussion
Based on Prof. Julie Gottlieb’s research and her artistic collaboration with writer-filmmaker Nicola Baldwin, the short film “The Nervous State” (19 minutes) is a dramatization of Cambridge academic, and Bloomsbury man of letters F.L. Lucas’s Journal Under the Terror, 1938 (1939). Largely forgotten until now, Lucas’s Journal unwittingly narrates the opening battles of the ‘war of nerves’ in Britain in that fateful year of crisis. It is also a richly evocative source that details the ‘history from within’ of the Crisis. Lucas’s wife Prudence experiences a nervous breakdown in the autumn of that year, mirroring the international crisis. Gottlieb will
speak about the historical context, the process of ‘knowledge exchange’ and co-creation between artists and scholars, before a screening of the film, and followed by Q&A.
