MONOGRAPHY LANGUAGE, GENDER AND POLITICS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
A new scholarly monograph, Language, Gender and Politics in Central and Eastern Europe, edited by our colleague Dr Ksenija Bogetić, has just been published.
This is the first comprehensive volume dedicated to research on language, gender and sexuality in the societies of Central and Eastern Europe. The contributions shed light on how debates on language, gender equality, sexuality, history and belonging intersect across different languages and political contexts.
Through the lens of semiotic resignification, the book poses an important challenge to Western-oriented frameworks in sociolinguistics. It also highlights current developments in a region increasingly described as a space of “anti-gender” politics—from restrictions on reproductive rights to the institutionalisation of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. At the same time, it foregrounds the rich traditions of feminist theory and protest in post-socialist societies and their significance for rethinking heteronormative patriarchy, neoliberalism, imperialism and social conflict.
With its wide range of approaches and themes, the book will appeal not only to scholars researching language, gender and sexuality but also to those working across the humanities and social sciences.
