DENISA NEČASOVÁ – HISTORY ON THE EDGE
On 3 June 2026, as part of the History on the Edge lecture series, we hosted a new lecture at the Institute of Contemporary History.
In her presentation, “The Socialist and Neoliberal ‘New Man’: Post-Revolutionary Discursive Images in Czechoslovakia (1948 and 1989)”, Denisa Nečasová compared the visions of the “new man” that emerged in two pivotal periods of Czechoslovak history – after the Communist takeover in 1948 and following the Velvet Revolution of 1989.
Drawing on the concepts of the new man and revolutionary culture, she demonstrated that despite the different political and social systems established after these events, both periods shared surprisingly similar ideas about transforming society and the individual.
The event was held in English, both at the Institute and via Zoom.
