Dr Ivan Smiljanić – Chernobyl 1986: A View from Yugoslavia

On 19 May 2026, Dr Ivan Smiljanić delivered a lecture at the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia entitled Chernobyl 1986: A View from Yugoslavia.

Marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, he presented the circumstances that led to the catastrophe and the responses of European—and particularly Yugoslav—political authorities and the wider public. The lecture explored how information about the accident reached Yugoslavia, how the political authorities responded, and how the public followed and understood the event.
