EXHIBITION SCHOOLS, PEOPLE, MEMORIES: EDUCATION OF CHILDREN WITH SENSORY DISABILITIES IN YUGOSLAVIA, 1919–1991
On 28 September 2026, the Institute for Recent History of Serbia opened the exhibition “Schools, People, Memories: Education of Children with Sensory Disabilities in Yugoslavia, 1919–1991.”
The exhibition was created within the international research project “Systems of Care and Education of Children with Sensory Disabilities in the First and Second Yugoslav State” (J6-50189), which is based at the Institute of Contemporary History and funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS).
The project explores the history of care and education of children with hearing and visual impairments in the former Yugoslavia. From historical, sociological, and anthropological perspectives, researchers examine the development of legislation and social policies, institutional networks, different models of education, and changing societal attitudes towards deaf and hard-of-hearing, blind and partially sighted people. Particular attention is also given to the transition from segregation and institutional care towards greater emphasis on inclusion and social integration.
The exhibition introduces visitors to some of the project’s key themes through the stories of schools, institutions, and people who helped shape systems of education and care for children with sensory disabilities in different periods and regions of the former Yugoslavia.
Before coming to Belgrade, the exhibition was already presented in Ljubljana and Zagreb.
The exhibition was opened by Dr Vladan Jovanović, Director of the Institute for Recent History of Serbia, Dr Nataša Milićević of the Institute for Recent History of Serbia, and Dr Dragana Gundogan of the Institute for Educational Research.
The exhibition can be visited every working day during the Institute for Recent History of Serbia’s opening hours until the end of October 2026.
