University of Graz, Austria
Visiting Fellowship 2025/26 (June 1, 2026 – July 1, 2026)
Dominik Gutmeyr-Schnur is a postdoctoral researcher at the section for Southeast European History and Anthropology at the University of Graz. His forthcoming book on networks of photographic practices in the transimperial Caucasus is the result of an FWF-Erwin-Schrödinger-Fellow at Uni Graz (2023–25) and University of California, Los Angeles (2021–23). He has previously managed two major Horizon2020 research projects on memory cultures and knowledge exchange in the wider Black Sea Region. His research interests encompass global and entangled histories with a particular emphasis on cultural representations and their visualization in a broadly construed (South-)Eastern Europe.
Statement of interest
As an INZ fellow, I will be working on a project on entangled histories of non-alignment between Yugoslavia and Cambodia that aims to conduct the first systematic investigation of the relations between the two countries and its manifestation in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) toward a decentered history of the Cold War. It is thereby situated within a wider research context that seeks to explore the historical relationship between the Socialist countries of (South-)Eastern Europe on the one hand and the countries of the Global South, often members of the NAM, on the other, and ultimately write global histories that are not centered on the West. By my project, I intend to show how entangled Yugoslav-Cambodian histories can bring together questions from political, social, economic, and cultural history, write histories of education and labor, address issues about anticolonial liberation movements and postcolonial feminism, and integrate themes of diplomacy, tourism, and representation into studies of visual culture.
