Project description:
In his research project, Dr Ágoston Berecz examines Eastern European national movements that transcended borders and rural populations with a sense of exclusion from state structures. In this context, state-driven modernization projects and the sudden growth of state power often caused harm to local communities, which could be exacerbated in the case of groups that state elites also saw as foreigners or even as a threat. The aim of the project is to investigate what rural citizens expected from national movements, how they expressed their opposition to state policies and to what extent their beliefs influenced the formation of popular forms of nationalisms.
