Andreas Guidi, Visiting Fellowship 2024/25
Short biography
Andreas Guidi is Associate Professor (Maitre de conférences) of History at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO) in Paris and a member of the Centre de recherches Europes-Eurasie (CREE). Before joining INALCO in 2022, he obtained his PhD in 2018 as a cotutelle de thèse between Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. He was then a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz and a visiting scholar at the German Historical Institute in Washington DC. His research focuses on the contemporary history of the Mediterranean and the Balkans, in particular the history of imperialism, colonialism and fascism, as well as the history of youth and generations. He explored these fields through a study of Rhodes in his award-winning first book: Generations of Empire: Youth from Ottoman to Italian Rule in the Mediterranean (University of Toronto Press, 2022). He has also published articles in several journals, including Journal of Social History (forthcoming 2025), Revue d’histoire moderne et contemporaine and International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies. He is currently working on a second book on the history of illicit trade in the Mediterranean from the 1940s to the 1960s.
Visiting Fellowship June 2025
Motivation
During my stay, I am eager to get in touch with members and other fellows of the institute working on topics such as borders, mobility, the Cold-War, and Yugoslavia from a Mediterranean perspective.
For my current book project, I am exploring the history of cigarettes smuggling around the Free Territory of Trieste, for which I plan to use sources from the State Archives in Ljubljana. I am also writing a handbook chapter on transimperial borderlands.
More generally, I am interested in strengthening the cooperation between my home institution and colleagues based in Slovenia and Southeast Europe, for example in the framework of a visit and a talk in our research seminar Histoire, politique et culture en Europe médiane for 2025-2026 or discussing manuscript ideas for the journal Balkanologie: Revue d’études pluridisciplinaires.
