Motivation
During my stay, I will discuss on application for the joint Croatian-Slovenian project with colleagues from the Institute, Marko Zajc and Isidora Grubački. Namely, my colleagues from the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, and I, have for a long time been discussing potential research on how, why, and whether national identity narratives had successfully superseded other concurrent supranational and/ or regional narratives in the course of 19 and 20 century, and what was the influence of the historical context upon the interplay of the narratives. We find the mentioned interplay between national and other identities important to research regarding findings on the power of national identity narratives. Since Croatian and Slovenian national identity-building narratives have been largely similar, but also different, due to the similarities and differences in the historical legacies of the nations, we thought it would be interesting to compare Croatia and Slovenia concerning the mentioned trends.
