Tugce Karatas, PhD

Research Scientist, Centre for Contemporary and Digital History, University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg

Tugce Karatas is a Research Scientist at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), University of Luxembourg, where she leads research data management, governance, and stewardship within the Digital Research Infrastructure team. She also serves as Luxembourg’s National Coordinator for DARIAH ERIC, the pan-European digital research infrastructure for the arts and humanities. She is the Principal Investigator (PI) of AISTER, a project exploring AI-driven approaches to preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage with an international consortium including the Europeana Foundation. She is also co-PI of the Cultural AI Hub of Luxembourg, being developed in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Culture’s Intelligent Heritage framework to advance research at the intersection of AI and cultural heritage. Through the COOPAIFA (AI Factories Cooperation) project, she contributes to the broader European network of AI Factories, Data Labs and emerging AI computing infrastructures.

Her work brings together Linked Open Data, ontological modelling, research data management, ethical and critical AI, and data-driven approaches to digital humanities. She is particularly interested in how data, technologies, and infrastructures can be designed to remain meaningful, reusable, interoperable, and sustainable, while addressing the ethical and epistemological questions raised by computational and AI methods in cultural heritage research.

Alongside her research, she teaches Data Management and Ethics at MA level and Introduction to Digital Tools for Humanities at BA level. Her teaching emphasises ethical and critical approaches to data and AI, focusing on lasting AI skills rather than training researchers only in rapidly changing tools.

Statement of interest:

I am particularly interested in a fellowship at INZ because of its strong track record in digital history methods, research infrastructures, and data-driven approaches to historical research. These areas closely align with my work as Luxembourg’s National Coordinator for DARIAH ERIC and my role as Head of Digital Research Infrastructure at C2DH, where I have developed and coordinated digital research infrastructures at both institutional and European levels—expertise I am eager to contribute to INZ’s projects during my fellowship.

INZ’s work on digital infrastructure for contemporary history, including processing born-digital and archival sources, closely complements my own work on AI-assisted metadata enrichment and sustainable data management for digital history projects.

During the fellowship, I aim to co-develop a shared data management and curation workflow for contemporary history and test an AI-assisted pipeline for the semantic enrichment of historical data. I look forward to collaborating with INZ’s digital history research group and strengthening collaboration between INZ and C2DH to foster new interdisciplinary research initiatives, facilitate exchange of technical know-how, and establish a foundation for long-term cooperation in research, infrastructure building and teaching.
