SMASH at INZ: Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities
On Wednesday, 10 November 2025, the Institute of Contemporary History hosted an educational event within the SMASH project, dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in contemporary research.
In the first part, Dr. Andrej Pančur and Filip Dobranić presented how INZ integrates machine learning methods into digital humanities and how humanities disciplines are evolving as they work with increasingly diverse types of data. They highlighted new research opportunities as well as the challenges of interdisciplinary collaboration.
The event continued with a discussion featuring Dr. Jana Javornik, who addressed questions related to building an academic career in today’s rapidly changing international research environment and questions of responsible AI ethics.
We are sharing a few highlights from the event, which offered valuable insights into the intersection of AI and the humanities.
