FILIP MITRIČEVIĆ – HISTORY ON THE EDGE
On 25 February 2026, we hosted a new lecture at the Institute of Contemporary History as part of the History on the Edge series.
In his talk “(Beyond) Heroes and Villains: Graphic Novels and History Education, Surveying the Former Yugoslav Republics,” Filip Mitričević explored why comics and graphic novels are thriving today and highlighted the cultural and political power of this medium.
He traced the historical development of comics and showed how graphic storytelling shapes representations of the past. He paid particular attention to how personal stories, gender, race, class, and authors’ perspectives influence artistic choices and historical interpretation, and he emphasised the educational potential of graphic novels as an entry point for younger readers. The lecture concluded with examples of graphic novels dealing with the history of the former Yugoslav republics.
