INVITATION – DR IVAN SMILJANIĆ: CHERNOBYL 1986: A VIEW FROM YUGOSLAVIA
As part of the On the Edge of Modernity (Na robu sodobnosti) lecture series, a lecture by our colleague Dr Ivan Smiljanić, entitled “Chernobyl 1986: A View from Yugoslavia,” will take place on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the Knights’ Hall of Cekin Mansion at the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia.
The lecture will mark the 40th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Chernobyl, which continues to attract considerable scholarly attention and public interest, has become synonymous with a catastrophe of immense proportions, as the largest nuclear accident in human history.
In his lecture, Dr Smiljanić will address what happened on 26 April 1986, who or what was responsible for the incident, and what consequences the accident had in the immediate surroundings of the power plant and across the European continent. Special attention will be devoted to responses in Yugoslavia: how the Yugoslav public, authorities, and institutions dealt with Chernobyl, which preventive measures were adopted, and what doubts and fears marked the population.
The On the Edge of Modernity series is dedicated to a comprehensive examination of Slovenia’s contemporary history, from the processes of independence to later social, political, and cultural changes that continue to shape our everyday lives.
The lectures are free of charge and open to the general public.
You are warmly invited!
