WEAST 2025 LJUBLJANA WORKSHOP – 19–20 June 2025. Economics, Nationalism and Politics in Central, East and South-East Europe
WEAST 2025 LJUBLJANA WORKSHOP
19-20 June 2025
Economics, Nationalism and Politics in Central, East and South-East Europe
The workshop examines the role of economic nationalism in the processes of nation-building in Central, East, and South-East Europe. Economic nationalism played a central role in shaping the national cultures of these regions and served as an alternative path to modernisation. Before World War I, economic nationalism primarily operated below the state level, but it was sometimes transformed into official state policy after the war.
This workshop aims to foster a discussion on the evolving dynamics of economic nationalism as a long-term development strategy and to explore economic nationalism in historical context. We are particularly interested in the interactions between economic, political and cultural factors underpinning economic nationalism, as well as the impact of economic nationalism on labour, financial and other markets.
We welcome contributions with different approaches and methodologies from various disciplines, including economic and business history, political and financial history, economics, and encourage papers that study the regional context of Central, East, and South-East Europe.
PhD candidates and early career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.
