A saprophagous organism again? Extreme right 2.0, ideological parasitism and culture wars
George L. Mosse described the fascist myth as a ‘saprophagous organism’ that tried to appropriate everything that had fascinated people between the 19th and 20th century: romanticism, liberalism and socialism, as well as Darwinism and modern technology. Can we consider the post Cold-War far right as a new kind of saprophagous organism, to use Mosse’s metaphor? To answer this question, in my intervention I will focus mainly on three aspects of the discourse and ideology of the new far right: ideological confusionism/syncretism, ideological parasitism (and semantic hijacking) and culture wars.
