Unified in a Cause: On Connected Histories of Czech and Slovenian National Socialism.
This lecture explores the emergence and evolution of the Catholic Women’s Unity in interwar Slovakia, a pivotal organization that redefined women’s roles through the lens of Christian feminism. Beginning with women’s suffrage in 1918, Slovak society faced a transformation in the political and social landscape, prompting conservative Catholic movements to adapt their strategies. The Catholic Women’s Unity sought to balance modernity with tradition, emphasizing the complementarity of men and women while defending family and faith against the perceived threats of secular feminism, socialism, and communism. By examining its nuanced stance on feminism, gender roles, and public engagement, this talk offers a window into the interplay between faith, politics, and the evolving concept of womanhood in a changing world.
