PAUL STUBBS – HISTORY ON THE EDGE
On 13 May 2026, as part of the History on the Edge lecture series, we hosted a new lecture at the Institute of Contemporary History.
The speaker, Paul Stubbs, presented the lecture “The Non-Aligned Movement and the New International Economic Order: lives, alter-lives, and afterlives”, exploring the history, significance, and legacy of the New International Economic Order.
The lecture highlighted how, during the 1970s, the Non-Aligned Movement increasingly shifted its focus from questions of political sovereignty and global security toward economic inequalities and demands for the restructuring of the international economic system.
Special attention was given to the role of the Non-Aligned Movement, the G-77, and UNCTAD in shaping the NIEO, as well as to the challenges of maintaining the unity of the Global South. The lecture demonstrated how the NIEO represented an attempt at “making the world otherwise” and why its legacy remains important for understanding today’s global inequalities.
The event was held in English at the Institute and via Zoom.
The full lecture will soon be available on our YouTube channel, Sistory Info.
