INZ RESEARCHERS AT THE ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY IN EAST-CENTRAL EUROPE CONFERENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OSTRAVA
On 28–29 May 2026, the conference Environment and Society in East-Central Europe took place at the University of Ostrava, bringing together scholars working on environmental history and related fields. Six researchers from the Department of Economic, Social and Environmental History of Slovenia participated in the event.
At the panel Hydrological Extremes in Slovenia: Floods, Droughts and Societal Responses from the 19th to the 21st Century, chaired by Janja Sedlaček, the following papers were presented:
- Ivan Smiljanić – If You See Me, Cry: Central European Hunger Stones as Symbols of Drought
- Nataša Henig Miščič – Hydrological Challenges: Examining Floods in Ljubljana and the Ljubljana Marshes in the Interwar Period
- Lev Centrih – The Last Battle for the Marsh: The Failed Agricultural Transformation of the Ljubljana Marsh in Socialist Slovenia
- Marta Rendla – The 1983 Drought as a Turning Point in the Conceptualization of Drought in Slovenia
- Dunja Dobaja – Implementation of the 2007 Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Assessment and Management of Flood Risks (Flood Directive) in Slovenia
Janja Sedlaček also participated in the panel The More-Than-Human in East-Central European Environmental History with her paper The Human-Water Relationship in Socialist Slovenia: Environment, Authorities, and Environmental Thought.
